Hello to whoever reads this,

Today was great. I ran out of my usual cereal so I tried this stuff called muesli with my vinilla soy milk. Its full of dried fruit, nuts, and...oats? Well, it's basically a perfect vegan cereal; it has alot of stuff in it that I read on the "what vegans have in their kitchen" lists. At first, I didn't really care for it. It was a little chewy and the milk blended with it so that the base became sort of like cereal mush, which sounds really gross except that, with all the other textures, I really didn't mind. After a few bites it started to grow on me and by the last couple drops I loved it.

We went shopping today. At first I brought out this long list and my mum said to shorten it and that that was what my dad was talking about when he said he doesn't want to buy a bunch of vegan food...except that all the things I named were vegetables and fruit. I figured that it was just the amount of stuff that she didn't like (I did name quite a few). Most of the items I named were fruit because I wanted to try to make smoothies. We went to a couple of different stores and I managed to bargain with mum enough to let me get the fruit, not all the fruit, but enough. We also bought Earth Balance vegan butter, which I found rather salty, some tofu and potatoes so I can make a dish I found in the recipes section here, and...well, alot of other stuff, but those are what stood out. :)

For lunch, we went to an italian restaurant, Buca de Beppo. It took us a bit longer to decide because I had to make sure what I chose didn't have any cheese or meat (which is extremely difficult at an italian restaurant). We settled on caprese, spaghetti and marinara sause, and a salad of greens that came with the most delicious dressing! It was absolutely fantastic!

Once we got home, my sis and I got everything prepared for making smoothies. We put all the frozen fruit (part of the bargaining) and ice into the blender and pressed "On." Oh, I forgot to mention, this was the first time we'd ever made a smoothie. So imagine our suprise as the blade spins and spins and nothing happens. It took us a while to figure out that we had to put juice in it. We filled it with apple juice then realised that we'd put too much fruit and ice into it. So we took some stuff out, put the lid back on, covered our ears, and pressed "On." Vroom vroom vro-- It stops. We press the button again and while it makes alot of noise, nothing happens inside. So we open the lid, stir it around, plop the lid on and hit the button. It grinds! For maybe five seconds. Well, my sister and I aren't quitters so we go at this for maybe ten minutes until, finally, the smoothie looks smooth enough to drink. We got our tall glasses out and our straws, pour the yummy looking dark magenta smoothie, put our lips to the straws ready for delicious fruity sensation and... "Heh heh..." We look at eachother awkwardly as we take a drastically smaller sip of the disgustingly sweet and overwelmingly apple flavored slush. We took a couple more tentative sips before dumping the toxin down the drain. I think, next time I'll look up how to make smoothies before I actually try it...and perhaps get a better blender.

With Hope,

Caroline

Ha ha. Awesome. Smoothies are really easy to make. I make mine with one or two frozen item so let's say a frozen banana and a large hand full of cranberries.I then add about the juice of 2 oranges or about a cup of juice. Then I add my other fruit. I really love berries in my smoothie so a lot of the time I make a strawberry/blueberry/cranberry/banana smoothie. Oh man it's great. So the amount of fresh berries is a hand full of blueberries and maybe 5 or so strawberries depending on their size. Make sure you cut them up too. If it's not a super powerful blender (mine is not) it is easier for the blades to move. Then really after that just add to "taste/sight" so if it seems to thick add some juice if it's to thin add some more fruit or a couple of ice cubes (again you may want to do small ice cubes or crushed if it's not a real powerful blender.)
For me I have the knock off kind of the bullet so it's this dinky thing but it gets me where I want to go for now. :-)
I hope this kind of helps to help you gauge how to do a smoothie. I mean it is really endless the combinations you can do.
Good luck and I look forward to reading about your next adventure. :-)

Oh also if you are a fan of Youtube check out a channel called Blend happy. She has some really good looking smoothies. :-)
